New Diagnosis Checklist

This checklist is designed to help families in Central Alabama access services and financial supports after a diagnosis. The steps are intentionally ordered based on how systems typically work in this region to make it easier to unlock additional support as you go. You do not need to complete everything at once — many families start with one step and return later.

Clear steps, strong support

Step 1

Apply for Social Security

Why this matters: This can unlock monthly financial support and eligibility for other programs later.

Step 2

Apply for Medicaid

Why this matters: Medicaid is often required to access therapies, waivers, and long-term services.

  • Call ADAP for help with application. They offer free legal services for people with disabilities.
  • If denied for income or any reason (including income), start the Alabama Medicaid Waiver application process.
  • There is a wait list for the Waiver but once approved you are qualified to apply to these two programs:
    • AL HIPP- The Alabama HIPP Program is designed to save money for Medicaid families with high healthcare costs by eliminating most out-of-pocket medical expenses for qualifying Medicaid recipients.  www.MyAlHipp.com
    • Personal Choices- Once approved for Medicaid or the Medicaid waiver program ask you caseworker about Personal Choices. “Under the Personal Choices program individuals are provided a monthly allowance from which they will determine what services they need. "

Step 3

Sign up for an early intervention therapy program.

Why this matters: Early therapy can begin before school-based services start and can support your child’s development.

The agencies listed below provide early intervention therapy services.

  • The Arc
  • The Bell Center for Early Intervention
  • United Ability

Step 4

Get enrolled with Child Rehab Services

Why this matters: Child Rehab Services offers a variety of specialized clinics, throughout the state, to meet your child’s needs.
