New Diagnosis Checklist

Clear steps, strong support

Step 1

Apply for Social Security

Step 2

Apply for Medicaid


  • Call ADAP for help with application. They offer free legal services for people with disabilities.
  • If denied for income or any reason (including income), start the Alabama Medicaid Waiver application process.
  • There is a wait list for the Waiver but once approved you are qualified to apply to these two programs:
    • AL HIPP- The Alabama HIPP Program is designed to save money for Medicaid families with high healthcare costs by eliminating most out-of-pocket medical expenses for qualifying Medicaid recipients.  www.MyAlHipp.com 
    • Personal Choices- Once approved for Medicaid or the Medicaid waiver program ask you caseworker about Personal Choices. “Under the Personal Choices program individuals are provided a monthly allowance from which they will determine what services they need. "

Step 3

Sign up for an early intervention therapy program. 

The agencies listed below provide early intervention therapy services.

  • The Arc
  • The Bell Center for Early Intervention
  • United Ability

Step 4

Get enrolled with Child Rehab Services

Child Rehab Services offers a variety of specialized clinics, throughout the state, to meet your child’s needs.

Buddy Blades

Buddy Blades is more than a skating playdate — it’s a transformative experience where kids of all abilities roll, glide, and grow together through the joy of inclusive recreation.


Happening Tuesday, December 16 from 6:00–8:30 PM, this free event features adaptive skating support, sensory-friendly lighting and music, and inclusive on-rink activities designed to help every child feel confident, connected, and celebrated.
